Summer 2012 ~ Part 2

Sometimes when you pray for something specific for someone you don't always get instant gratitude.
And then it happens.  Answers to many prayers ~ the fruit of hard labor ~ the end of an old era and the beginnings of a new one.

Graduation Day.  A welcome event for anyone who has struggled to get to that point.  A blessed event for the parents of that someone.

We are no different.

We are thankful.

We are proud of her.

There she is!  Right in the middle.  With her diploma!

She did it! A job well done.

Were the struggles worth it?  All the tears, the heartache?  The unknowing moments of her life?  The mistakes?  The huge trials?  The long awaited triumphs?  They say a picture is worth a thousand words.  I think this one says it all and points to a much bigger picture.

Summer 2012 ~ Part 1

Well, summer is nearly at an end ~ as far as time off is concerned.  It really doesn't end 'til mid September, but school starts here in just a few short days, and for all intents and purposes, summer is almost over.  So I'd better get busy and re-cap these past few months ~ which by the way, flew by at the speed of light!  Can I just say:  "Whoa, Nelly!"

We started our summer going to KY to see our clan there.  We had two special reasons to go this trip (not counting the love we have for that gang).  First was to celebrate Baby A's first birthday! And secondly to see our oldest grandie-girl graduate!   But as we all know, life has a way of throwing a monkey wrench in our junk!   Ol' Bessy, I think, is on her last leg.  I'm prayin' for a merciful death only after we have replaced her!

This is how the first half of our 12 hour journey looked:
Poor Bob.  It was a bad waiting game for a man with little to no patience.
We spent as much time waiting for her to cool down as we did driving it seemed. Oh the glory of it all. Not much to do other than snap a few shots of the beauty of the area. We were stopped at a popular rest stop to "cool down". I-68 is a pass cut thru the mountains and the rest stop is a dedicated Vietnam War Memorial

The Rest Stop
.

You can walk up a million steps to the walk over.  I've gone up the
steps before, but didn't have the guts to cross over the interstate below!
The interstate with the mountain on each side.  Quite breath taking, and
quite intimidating!

Felt like you could see for miles! Well, actuall, you can. It is
breathtaking to say the least.  It makes my heart yearn for home.

We made a couple more "necessary" stops before we got to KY.  All in all we did okay.  It was what it was.

Once we arrived in the land of horses, we hit the ground running, and working (to fix Ol' Bessy) and playing, and running some more.

Presents first.  While we're still clean.

Um  . . . . see the tears running down her chest?  We were taking
waaay too long!  Ah, but notice the eyes.  Oh yea.  Something's
getting ready to happen.

Only when you're one can you get away with this!!  I believe she even had it up her little nose!

Let's take a breath. Pick up fresh in a bit.

Sweet Surprise

Sometimes it's the little surprises that have the most impact.
Like last night for example.   Bob and I went to the PO after picking up our regular Friday night pizza. We hadn't been since Hope left on the 1st of August.  The sad thing is ~ the PO is across the street!  For the shame of it all!

As I'm sorting thru the mail, separating mine, Kelly's and Ben's, I run across a card addressed to me:
I'm excited and curious at the same time.  It's printed like an invitation, and seeing who it's from really makes me curious.  She just graduated ~ so that can't be it.  I don't even want to entertain any other kinds of ideas.   Noooo Ma'am.  Not gonna.  Excited because the stamp is a rooosterrrr!
Couldn't wait to get home to open it!  Pizza can wait.  Cards cannot.

Can I tell you when I looked inside I was giddy with joy?  (It wasn't "the other kinds of possibilities"!  PTL! ! )  This is what greeted me:

Let me just say, love is an understatement!  I tear up just writing this.  Such a blessing to end my week! How she managed to find a card that fit was just too cool!   But then I open the card ~ and this is what I see:

Can I just cry now and be done with it?
Surprise doesn't quite fit the bill.  I was elated!
This isn't a store bought card at all ~ which is the icing on the cake because these are HER words!

I flipped it over to see what program she used to make it.

And ~ hellloooo:

All I can do is smile.

Thank you Alicia for such kind and thoughtful words.
I love you so very much!
So.  Very.   Much.

Love,
Mom-mom

Comedy Central, Bang 'em Up and Leaky Things

I have a lot to share about my summer.  A lot of fun,  nice things.  But since this is so fresh on my mind and has left me temporarily scarred, I will go ahead and share this first so I can get on with the healing process.

My summer has been a blur of busyness! But, life has a way of inserting its quirkiness ~ like it or not. In this case it was a "NOT". Our glorious old bathroom ~ the one that you have to drop an A-bomb on to begin remodel ~ had an on-curring tub faucet leak. One that was so bad I threatened the no-no word: Nag. We already had a new faucet, so let's get this thing on! That's what I "suggested". So, my trusty, feisty handyman, Ben, decided to tackle the beast. He is after all, fearless when it comes to this old house. And. . . he decided to tackle it in the late, very late, afternoon, on a Sunday. Not a good idea me thinks. He did, however ~ in his defense ~ buy some supplies beforehand. But you know life ~ it has a mean sense of humor, and we didn't have all we needed. Not feeling his own brute strength he (he being Ben, the Man, the Beast) turned a pipe wrench, or some kind of tool, a little too hard, hit the hot water line breaking it in half. Before anyone downstairs could register what his screams were about, approximately 300 gallons of water (in his - being Ben's guesstimate) spilled onto the floor (in the scary closet that only grown, brave men will venture into, behind our glorious old bathroom) and down onto the porch below. What occurred next was a mixture of "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly", and "The Three Stooges". (I can say that now because the pain has subsided somewhat). Ben has a shop vac attachment trying to funnel the water into a bucket and dump it into the tub. Not a pretty sight. He bolts down two flights of stairs, to the basement to shut off the main valve (of which there appeared to be several ), only to bolt back up two flights of stairs to find out his efforts were futile. By the time Bob and I made it to the bathroom, to say he was irritated and hysterical would be an understatement. After a couple of trips, Bob finally found the correct shut off valve and the meltdowns began. Oh yeah, I had one. Outside. Away from the pain of water damage and the frustration of a self proclaimed plumber.  Poor Kelly tried to console me, but to no avail.  Ben, the Man, the Beast, had one in our glorious old bathroom with the scary closet. Everyone else looked like deer caught in the headlights. Afraid to move, afraid to speak. Not pretty. No ma'am.

In retrospect, Sunday probably was a good day to have this "catastrophe", since Bob and Kelly had work on Monday. Less folk in the house. Needless to say, Mr. Handyman had to get up a the butt crack of dawn to get to Lowe's to get the rest of his supplies (he was a trooper ~ and he had to make more than one trip). God love this boy's soul! He made me stay with him in that glorious old bathroom for moral support. I wasn't allowed to offer up much opinion ~ I just had to be a live, breathing body in the same room. And on occasion, I was allowed to hand him some kind of tool, or plumbing stuff, or the faucet, or a drink.  It's  hard work being a plumber's helper!  The girls were real troopers. Hope and Rease kept Helena and Piper busy. Thank the Lord for them! That was one less thing for me to worry about.

So, it's been about two weeks (seems like five minutes ago) and we have a new tub faucet, free of leaks and quite cute in that old glorious bathroom. Now to fix the leak in the sink. . . . . .

Are "A-bombs" illegal?
